Duration - 12-14 minutes
Tokyo Shift Response is a setting of poems written by Suzuki Elico, who was commissioned by artist-researchers Jamie Allen, Martin Howse, and Jonathan Kemp in 2017. Ms. Suzuki was asked to write poems on the themes of “decay,” “radioactivity,” and “death.” The project was “an investigation into how human technological and infrastructural activities have marked the earth…[which] has been transformed into a ‘planetary library’ subject to further study, control, and comprehension.” This composition is a response and deep contemplation on the poetry
“Shift Register is a research project investigating how technological and infrastructural activities have made Earth into a planetary laboratory. The project maps and activates local dynamics and material shifts between human, earthly and planetary bodies, and temporalities. Contemporary, mainstream science and technology are intersected with other knowledge systems to attempt a reconfiguration of relations between humans and the earth.” ~Shift Register Critical Media Lab
The poems in Tokyo Shift Response were written by artist/improviser Suzuki Elico in August 2017 in response to the Tokyo Shift Register workshop around the themes of “decay”, “radioactivity,” and “death.”
