Sisyphus is inspired by the works of composers Olivier Messiaen, Ivan Wyschnegradsky, and the philosopher Albert Camus. The cyclical nature of this composition is inspired by King Sisyphus’ punishment for deceiving the Greek Gods: endlessly pushing a boulder up a hill, only for it to roll away as Sisyphus nears the peak. For me, this composition is an exploration of Camus’ Myth of Sisyphus where pushing the boulder represents a never-ending leap of faith against all odds into the unknown.
Albert Camus stated that individuals should embrace the absurd condition of human existence while also defiantly continuing to explore and search for meaning.
This piece was composed for and is dedicated to Susanne and Veli Kujala. It is 10 minutes long.
