Program note:
Blood on the Pavement 1984 is a tripartite composition written between October 2017 and March 2018 and is inspired by the Irish-born artist Francis Bacon and two of his paintings: Blood on the Pavement 1984 and Study of a Bull (1991). Bacon was a prolific artist, creating over 600 paintings during his seventy plus years of painting. His creative process was extremely varied and was not limited to conventional methods of painting. In addition to standard painting techniques, Bacon also used knives, combs, brooms, nailbrushes and rags “impregnated with paint” to manipulate his materials. Towards the end of his life, Bacon would mix aerosol paint with oil and dust. Furthermore, Bacon also favored throwing paint as his canvases, claiming it produced “entirely random results.” These types of random results would create “mistakes” that he would then repeatedly alter and rework until he created a satisfactory work or would destroy it.

My composition uses Bacon’s Blood on the Pavement as a timbral and registral roadmap beginning in the bottom left-hand corner of the painting. The second section of the composition explores the titular pavement and blood spatter. The sonic impetus of this section is a loose interpretation of reverse tape techniques often heard in musique concrete and is complemented by irregular “heartbeats” in the strings and clarinet. The final section of the composition ascends into the top black portion of the canvas, anachronistically combined with Bacon’s Study of a Bull. Shrill ascending string sounds hiss through the air like aerosol paints and mix with dust just before the bull exits.
